Myrtle Beach Kayaking Tips and Tricks

Kayaking with Children

We love when you bring your children kayaking with us! The natural curiosity and energy of children make kayaking a great way for families to explore Myrtle Beach area  and the natural world around them, and we know that your child’s safety is the most important thing to you.

There are a few things to keep in mind before bringing your family along on one of our Kayak Tours in Myrtle Beach.

One of the questions we are most commonly asked is “How old do you have to be to go on your tours?” and the answer to that question is: old enough to enjoy what each trip asks of its participants, but usually our trips are best enjoyed by those over the age of five. Our trips vary in length and actual paddling time, and what works for one family may not be the best fit for another family.

Our Private Island tour, for, example, is three hours long, but only requires paddlers to be in their kayaks for about an hour and a half. The rest of the time is spent exploring Waties Island, a natural barrier island full of history and shells. Many families love this option for children under 10.

Older, or children with more paddling experience may enjoy the relaxation of the Cherry Grove Salt Marsh tour. This trip is two hours in length, but is totally on the water.

Our Waccamaw River tour is approximately 3 hours of on-the-water time, and has one 15-20 minute break built in. This is a great option for those who want to cruise down an ancient black water river and who feel comfortable with possible run ins with wildlife.

No matter what your choice, there are a few across the board guidelines we always follow:

Coast Guard regulations require all children under twelve to wear a personal flotation device (P.F.D.) that is fitted especially for children- and we have plenty for you to use.

All children under 12 are required to sit up front on a tandem kayak with an adult while on your Myrtle Beach kayak tour. This way, if they get tired, the adult in the boat can take over paddling duties, and it allows to you to keep an eye on your child the entire time.

No matter your choice- a tour with Glass Bottom Kayak Tours is one of Myrtle Beach’s top things to do. Once you choose the best trip for your family, we want you to have the best experience possible, so here are a few things we recommend:

1) Sun block. A child specific, high SPF, waterproof sunblock can be invaluable on an Myrtle Beach summer afternoon.

2) Water. Leave the sugary drinks at home, and make sure your child stays hydrated with plenty of water. We recommend bringing at least two, 16-ounce bottles along for each member of your party.

3) Snacks. Paddling is a workout! We always encourage families with children to bring snacks along on their trips. It helps everyone keep their energy up, keeps little tummies happy, and moms and dads happy.

Whichever trip you choose, we want you to know that the safety and happiness of your family is the most important thing to us. If you aren’t sure of which trip to choose, or if your child is ready, just give us a call, and we will help you.
